The technique and description is based on Paintshop Pro but most drawing packages will have similar functions. Exact settings might vary. A basic working knowledge of Paintshop Pro is assumed.
File --> New
Image Dimensions
Width = 100 pixels
Height = 65 pixels
Resolution = 72 pixels / inch
Image Characteristics
Background colour can be anything (will be filled in the next step).
Image type = 24 bit
Change background colour to grey: Red = 192; Green = 192; Blue = 192
Select the Flood Fill tool.
Flood fill with background colour.
Select Text tool.
Click approximately in the middle of the image field.
Font
Name = Georgia
Size = 36
Colour = Black
Floating
No antialias
Position the text approximately in the middle of the field.
Selection --> Modify --> Expand = 1 pixels
Edit --> Clear
Image --> Effects --> Cutout
Cutout Attributes
Fill interior with colour
Interior colour - Green: Red = 0; Green = 255; Blue = 0
Shadow colour - Black: Red = 0; Green = 0; Blue = 0
Opacity = 100
Blur = 5
Vertical offset = -5
Horizontal offset = 8
Selection --> Modify --> Expand = 1 pixels
Double-click on Selection tool
Surround current selection
Image --> Crop to selection
Colors --> Decrease Color Depth --> 16 Colors (4 bit)
Decrease Color Depth Options
Palette = Optimised Median Cut
Reduction method = Nearest Color
Color --> Set Palette Transparency
Set the transparency value to the current background color
File --> Save As --> Compuserve Graphics Interchange (.gif) format
